The International Deaf Referees Union (IDRU) has announced the selection of four Deaf futsal referees for the upcoming Winter Deaflympics 2027 in Innsbruck, Austria. The appointments mark another important step in strengthening Deaf representation in international futsal officiating.
The four selected referees will officiate matches during the futsal tournament, bringing their experience from domestic competitions and international Deaf sporting events to one of the world’s largest sporting stages for Deaf athletes.
The selection follows an evaluation process focusing on technical knowledge, physical fitness, match management and communication skills. Each referee has demonstrated the ability to officiate at a competitive level while adapting to the specific demands of Deaf futsal.
Supporting referees on the international stage
IDRU has continued to advocate for greater opportunities for Deaf referees to participate in international competitions. The Winter Deaflympics provide an important platform for officials to gain experience, exchange knowledge and demonstrate their abilities.
In preparation for the tournament, the selected referees will participate in technical briefings and development activities designed to ensure consistent application of the Laws of the Game.
The Winter Deaflympics 2027 will take place from 11 to 25 January in Innsbruck and Seefeld, bringing together Deaf athletes from around the world.
IDRU congratulates the four appointed referees and wishes them every success throughout the tournament.
